Lady Aviator Harriet Quimby. In 1911 Harriet Quimby became the first woman in the United States to earn her pilot's license. The following year, on April 16, 1912, she became the first woman to fly across the English Channel. Unfortunately fate cheated her out of international fame since the world’s newspapers were focused on the sinking of RMS Titanic which happened the day before. She died in an air crash a couple months later.
