It is native from the Andaman Sea in the Eastern Indian Ocean to Western Australia and in the Pacific, from southern Japan to New South Wales and New Caledonia; throughout most of Oceania to the Hawaiian Islands. It occurs in both fresh and salt waters. It is a schooling fish that feeds on various fishes and crustaceans. It can reach a maximum length of 120 cm (47.2 in) and a maximum published weight of 10.1 kg (22.3 lbs).
