It shows a lone male figure who is hiking deep in the wilderness of a remote German woodland. The hiker is standing beside a river that is raging with fast-moving water. The sky is ominous with dark clouds, suggesting that a storm may soon be coming. The image celebrates the smallness of one man striving against the forces of nature. The original artwork was painted by Andreas Achenbach in 1841.
