Replica of historic submarine Ictineo II in Barcelona, Spain. The original was built of olive wood with oak reinforcing and copper sheaving, by inventor Narcus Monturiol i Estarriol in 1864. (The British Navy acquired its first submarine built in Britain to a U.S. design in 1902). Unlike Holland I, Britains first submarine, Ictineo II was not intended as a weapon of war but as a lifesaving device. It's the first true, modern submarine as it had an engine (steam), could dive to 90 feet and stay down for 7 and a half hours.
