About This Design

Hojo Scales Tile

The Hojo clan's family crest is said to be three scales, commemorating the time when Hojo Tokimasa, during the early Kamakura period, obtained three scales left behind by a giant snake when he visited Enoshima Benzaiten (according to 'Taiheiki' by Ito Kosaku, 'Nihon no Monsho'). According to 'Nihon Monshogaku' by Numata Raisuke, the Hojo clan's three-scale crest is modeled after a dragon's scales. This scale pattern is thought to have originated from a scale-shaped design, and the legend was likely added to give it a mystical significance.

My fiancé and I were happy when we received the tile. It’s Peru and was worth paying extra for expressing postage. Good quality and it is exactly like we wanted it. We are very pleased.
