The old mill pond and mill, established by the Howard family near Jakin, GA was a place everyone in the nearby communities loved to go. During the 135 years that the Howards owned and operated the grist mill, everyone and anyone was welcome to fish, boat, swim and picnic and all free of charge. Many family reunions, school reunions, birthdays, fishing and swimming trips and holiday activities were held there because of the graciousness of this family. Prior to the Indian removal and resettlement, there was an Indian village by the spring-fed pond. Now privately owned and reconstructed as a getaway, it is fenced in and no longer welcomes these events or outside visitors. But generations of "ghosts" linger there remembering the good 'ole days and the hospitality of generations of the Howard family.
