These words are attributed to Hannibal, a military commander of ancient Carthage, one of Rome’s greatest adversaries. It is said to have been Hannibal’s response when his generals expressed their misgivings about his plan to march his troops, including cavalry and war elephants, across the Alps in order to strike at Rome from the north.
