About This Design

Ikeda Triple Gentian Travel Mug

Ikeda Triple Gentian Travel Mug

The Ikeda family crest, known for the Bizen butterfly, was a subsidiary crest of the Bizen Okayama domain with over 310,000 koku. In 1635, Mitsumasa's third son, Terutoshi, was given 15,000 koku and established a branch domain in Ikuzaka, Okayama Prefecture. The official crest was the 'Ikeda triple butterfly,' and the alternate crest was the 'triple gentian.' In 1672, when Mitsumasa retired and his eldest son, Tsunamasa, succeeded him, he gave his younger brother, Masatoki, 25,000 koku of newly developed land and established a branch domain in Kamogata, Okayama Prefecture. The official crest was the 'facing butterfly' (Ikeda facing butterfly), and the alternate crest was the 'triple gentian.' (Kenichi Takahashi, 'The Family Crests of Daimyo Families'). In 'A Study of Official Crests' by Manjiro Fukui, this crest is referred to as the 'Okayama Ikeda triple vine gentian' and is considered a subsidiary crest of the Bizen Okayama domain with over 310,000 koku. The subsidiary crest of the branch domains, Bizen Kamogata 25,000 koku Ikeda family and Bizen Ikuzaka 15,000 koku Ikeda family, is different and is referred to as the 'Ikeda branch family triple gathered gentian,' a design without vines.

Very happy with both the quality of the print and travel mug itself. Was hesitant being from NZ that the item wouldn't arrive in time for Father's day given the shipping guidelines, but it took only 5 days to arrive - 2 days before estimated delivery. Highly recommended. .
