He called it "the lightning conductor for my craziness" because he believed he could continue painting while keeping himself from going insane. Strong shapes, strange angles, close-up views, and flat local colour evoke the Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock prints that served as inspiration (not modelled according to the fall of light). The whole picture has an air of softness and lightness. Irises are lively and active when there is no melancholy.
