Taken at about the age of 9, this would date the picture about 1929. Her name was actually Catherine Jane, but she always went by Jane. On her first day of school, the teacher called her Catherine in role call. She declined to respond. After two further attempts to get "Catherine" to respond, she stood up and spelled out "J - A - N - E, Good afternoon" and promptly sat down. The teacher never made the mistake again.
