John Dix T Shirt

John Dix: 1798-1879 John Dix was Union Army officer. He joined the military at the age of 14 and fought in the War of 1812. During the Civil War, he was the first President of the New York Defence Committee and bore responsibility for raising money, supplies and volunteers for the Union. He was admitted to the Bar as a practicing attorney from New York, where he served as the 24th Governor from 1873 to 1874. During his career, he served also as Secretary of the Treasury, A United States Senator, was president of the Mississippi and Missouri Railroad and served as president of the Union Pacific Railroad during the construction of the first transcontinental railroad. During the Civil War, Dix was appointed as a major general of the New York army and served as the highest ranking officer of the volunteers during the war. He is credited with having prevented Maryland from seceeding from the Union. At the close of the Civil War, Dix, representing the Union, and Maj. Gen. D. H. Hill, representing the Confederacy, concluded the negotiations for the exchange and release of prisoners between the two factions. He closed his long career as United States Minister to France.
