Join or Die Mug

Join, or Die is Benjamin Franklin's political cartoon published in his Pennsylvania Gazette on May 9, 1754. It's the earliest known pictorial representation of colonial union produced by a British colonist in America. The original was actually a woodcut showing a snake severed into eighths, with each segment labelled with the initial of a British American colony or region. The cartoon appeared along with Franklin's editorial about the "disunited state" of the colonies, and helped make his point about the importance of colonial unity. During that era, there was a superstition that a snake which had been cut into pieces would come back to life if the pieces were put together before sunset.

Saw mug in catalog and immediately had to have it. Unfortunately, USPS apparently lost it in shipment. I wish Zazzle had a system so that they would alert you to delays. Anyway, once I figured out the product was way late, I contacted Zazzle, and they "expresso'd" me a replacement mug. I think it's beautiful and very well done! Huzzah! P.S. Maybe Zazzle consider offering mugs in "expresso" (4 ounce) and "1 cup" (8 ounce) sizes for those of us trying our best to drink less coffee but not yet up to going cold turkey (Ben Franklin's nomination for the American bird)? : ). Turned out great! Reminds me of offerings now at the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia!
