The folded paper crane has become a symbol of world peace. The story, Sadako and a Thousand Paper Cranes, is about a young Japanese girl, Sadako Sasaki, who became ill with leukaemia after the bombing of Hiroshima. While ill, Sadako began to fold paper cranes according to the Japanese tradition that folding one thousand cranes can bring good health, prosperity and long life. Sadako died at the age of twelve, before she could reach her goal. While she had folded 644 cranes, her classmates completed the remaining 356. Because of Sadako and her story, a peace park stands in Hiroshima today. In the park, there is a statue of Sadako holding an origami crane in her hands. Every year, thousands of paper cranes are folded and sent to Hiroshima, Japan as a symbol of the hope for peace on earth. This ornament can be hung on the Christmas tree, or be given as a keepsake for best wishes in the New Year.
