The forester kangaroo, Macropus giganteus tasmaniensis , is generally recognised as the Tasmanian subspecies of the eastern grey kangaroo, Macropus giganteus giganteus, which is widespread throughout eastern Australia. On the Australian mainland, the eastern grey kangaroo inhabits heathland, shrubland, woodland and open forest of the coast, mountains, slopes and plains. Less than 1% of the species’ current total range occurs in Tasmania, where forester kangaroos are restricted to the flatter and drier areas in the eastern half of the state, below 1000 metres.
