In 1967 Kathrine Switzer became the first woman to run the Boston Marathon. Thomas Miller, her boyfriend at the time protected her from anyone who tried to physically stop her. It wasn't until 1972 that women were officially allowed to run in the Boston Marathon. This was a pivotal moment, often overlooked, in women's rights.
