Katmai National Park Brown Bears Postcard

This artwork is inspired by Katmai National Park and Preserve, located on the Alaska Peninsula in southwestern Alaska. Established as a national monument in 1918 following the dramatic eruption of Novarupta in 1912, Katmai became a national park and preserve in 1980. Covering more than four million acres, the park protects a vast landscape of rugged mountains, active volcanic terrain, tundra, rivers, lakes, and coastal ecosystems. The brown bears depicted in this illustration represent one of Katmai's most celebrated wildlife attractions. Each summer, thousands of sockeye salmon migrate upstream through the park's waterways, providing an abundant food source that supports one of the world's highest concentrations of protected brown bears.
