King boletus mushrooms are one of three known edible species of mushroom on Unalaska Island. They appear in late July and August, often reaching a diameter of 10 -12 inches. The mushroom shown here has been eaten by slugs, it was about 5 inches in diameter and height. It will grow into a large flat platter.
