King Vulture Poster
Probably the most colourful vulture you'll ever see, these magnificent creatures live in tropical lowland forests from Mexico to Argentina, so many of us would never have seen one, until now. They have a wingspan up to about 6 feet and it's not known how long they live in the wild, though in captivity they can live up to 30 years.
These birds are not on the endangered species list, yet, but they are declining in parts due to habitat loss. The estimated number of King Vultures is between 1,000 and 50,000 which just goes to show how little research has been done on these birds. Its scientific name is Sarcoramphus papa, but in the language of the Aztecs it is known as Cozcacauhtli meaning 'Jewelled collar eagle'.
