While this kitchen isn't as rural as you can get, its close. If your really living off the grid, you would bring water in by hand from a near by river. But that is hard to do, and not that elegant, especially in the winter. So the pump was invented, it was also outdoors, but easier than carrying buckets. Then someone had the bright idea of putting the pump on the inside of the house, now you can get water any time you want. It's a real time saver.
