Gustav Klimt's painting "Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I" is considered one of his most famous and iconic works. It was painted between 1903 and 1907 and is part of his "Golden Phase," during which he used gold leaf in many paintings. The painting depicts Adele Bloch-Bauer, a Jewish socialite who was a close friend of Klimt's. The painting was seized during World War II and was held in a museum in Austria until 2006, when it was returned to the Bloch-Bauer family. It was sold at auction for $135 million in 2006, a record price for a painting at that time.
