Coconut Lorikeet, Trichoglossus haematodus Jigsaw Puzzle
This exquisite natural history illustration, titled "La Perruche à face bleue" (The Blue-faced Parakeet), is the work of the renowned French botanical and zoological artist Jacques Barraband (1767–1809). Created for the seminal publication Histoire Naturelle des Perroquets, Barraband’s mastery of detail and colour is evident in the intricate rendering of the bird’s plumage. The illustration captures a parrot—historically identified in this plate as a variation of the Coconut Lorikeet (Trichoglossus haematodus)—perched majestically on a weathered branch with its wings partially outspread, showcasing the vibrant, multi-layered patterns of its underside.
The Coconut Lorikeet, a species native to the islands of Indonesia, Melanesia, and Australia, is celebrated for its kaleidoscopic appearance. As depicted in this vintage engraving, the bird features a deep blue head, a bright orange-red breast, and a striking yellow-green collar. In nature, Trichoglossus haematodus is a highly active and social nectarivore, possessing a specialised brush-tipped tongue designed for feeding on the nectar and pollen of flowers. Barraband’s artistic precision emphasizes the bird’s powerful zygodactyl feet and sharp, curved beak, which are essential for its arboreal lifestyle in tropical rainforests.
For collectors and enthusiasts of ornithological art, this piece represents the pinnacle of early 19th-century scientific illustration. Jacques Barraband’s collaboration with the scientist François Levaillant remains one of the most significant achievements in the history of natural history publishing. By blending scientific accuracy with aesthetic elegance, "La Perruche à face bleue" continues to be a definitive reference for the beauty of the Coconut Lorikeet, serving as both a historical record of biodiversity and a timeless example of fine French engraving.

This is the second puzzle I've created and ordered. The pieces are really high quality and the color for the pictures is excellent! I made a collage of over 50 pictures for my niece for Christmas and she loved it! Colors are perfect and vibrant.

I customized a puzzle as a fund raiser for my adoption. I wanted a puzzle that I could "sell" pieces to raise money, and write the names of all the donors on the back of the pieces. The puzzle arrived ahead of the projected delivery date, and the quality was incredible! The backs were clean and the different sizes and shapes worked perfectly for writing names. I have finished putting the puzzle together, and I just need a frame to put in on our new baby's wall with the names of everyone who helped us bring him home written on the back! Image quality was great! The wording was sharp, and the picture was just the right amount of fuzzy (the picture was drawn and colored with pencil shading).
