La Tortue et les deux Canards: Jean de La Fontaine Postcard

Illustration of the Fable of the Tortoise and the Two Ducks by Jean de La Fontaine engraved by Jean-Baptiste Oudry (17 March 1686 – 30 April 1755),a French Rococo painter, engraver, and tapestry designer. In the story, the turtle asks to see the world and the ducks propose a solution. The turtle should bite and hang onto a stick which they will jointly bear aloft. But in her vanity, the turtle cries out "I am the Turtle Queen." But when she opens her turtle beak, she looses her grip and falls to earth. The intended lesson is both a warning to avoid vanity, and an admonishment to find contentment in ones own home.
