Lake Natron Tanzania Postcard

Lake Natron is one of the most extreme environments on Earth, a caustic salt lake in northern Tanzania that serves as the only regular breeding ground for East Africa's 2.5 million lesser flamingos. The water’s high alkalinity and scorching temperatures protect the nesting birds from predators, creating a safe but harsh sanctuary in the shadow of the Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano. The lake's surface is often stained a deep blood-red by salt-loving microorganisms, providing a dramatic and fiery foreground for the massive colonies of flamingos. It is a landscape of primal beauty, where the heat haze and volcanic ash create a shimmering, atmospheric veil over the pink-hued shores.
