Lake Tekapo New Zealand Postcard

Lake Tekapo is a breathtaking turquoise jewel set against the rugged backdrop of the Southern Alps in New Zealand's South Island. The lake owes its remarkable milky-blue colour to fine rock flour suspended in the glacial meltwater, creating a stunning contrast with the surrounding golden tussock grasslands. Perched on its shores is the iconic Church of the Good Shepherd, a solitary stone structure that has become one of the most photographed landmarks in the country, symbolising the pioneer spirit of the Mackenzie Basin. Beyond its vibrant waters, the area is globally renowned as part of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. With some of the clearest and darkest skies in the Southern Hemisphere, it is a premier destination for stargazing and astronomical research at the nearby Mount John Observatory. During the late spring and early summer, the lakefront erupts in a sea of purple, pink, and blue lupins, adding a layer of whimsical colour to an already ethereal landscape.
