The Lakeland Terrier breed was developed to protect sheep from fox. The breed is derived like the Welsh Terrier from the now extinct Old English Black and Tan Terrier. The breed has been known by a variety of names including Patterdale, Fell, Cumberland and Westmoreland terrier.
