Lauca National Park Chile Postcard

Lauca National Park is a dramatic and high-altitude biosphere reserve located in the Arica y Parinacota region of northern Chile, bordering Bolivia. It is known for its stark Andean scenery, including the perfectly conical, snow-capped volcanoes like Parinacota and Pomerape, which dominate the horizon. The park encompasses a vast Altiplano landscape chraacterised by rolling grasslands, wetlands, and large salt flats, creating a unique and fragile ecosystem. A key highlight is Chungará Lake, one of the world's highest non-navigable lakes, famous for reflecting the stunning volcanoes and providing a habitat for diverse wildlife. Visitors can spot vicuñas, llamas, alpacas, and many bird species, including Andean flamingos, Puna teals, and giant coots. Small, traditional Aymara villages, with their adobe buildings and belfries, add cultural richness to this incredibly remote and scenic park, which is part of the Andes mountain range.
