Being a man of great compassion, Valentine also helped Christians escape callous Roman prisons where they were incessantly tortured and beaten … adding to his defiance against the Emperor. The legend affirms that Valentine himself sent the first valentine to his love during his confinement. He fell deeply in love with a young girl, the jailor’s daughter.
