Les Mérveilleuses - 18th Century Fashion Victims

"Les Mérveilleuses" Engraving by Carle Vernet ( France, 1758 - 1836). Two "Mérveilleuses," accompanied by an "Incroyable" take a stroll on a Paris street. They wear the exaggerated hats and hairstyles of the period. At the end of the French Revolution, a wave of relief and of fashion giddiness swept Paris. Young men known as "Incroyables" and their female counterparts "Les Mérveilleuses" rejoiced in adopting a wildly exaggerated look which flouted the social conventions of the time. This card is reproduced from the original in our own collection.
