The original building and its collection were destroyed in the war of 1812. A new collection was created when Congress purchased the books of Thomas Jefferson’s personal library. The Library of Congress now contains more that 32 million cataloged books, 61 million manuscripts , and 3 million sound recordings, among other holdings.
