It was the first time in my life I have seen a sun halo. Moon halos are spotted more often. A sun halo is a ring or light that occurs due the sunlight refracting in millions of ice crystals. The halo is usually seen as a bright, white ring although sometimes it can have colour. This effect is caused by thin cirrus clouds, which are formed very high up in the atmosphere. Weather folklore says a ring around the sun or moon means it will rain soon but it might not always been the case.
