Lincoln was born in 1809 in Carue County, Kentucky. At the age of 16, he worked on the ferryboats on Anderson Creek. His Education was limited to one year of formal schooling. Through his own thirst for knowledge, he educated himself. He served as a flatboatman on the Mississippi and later came to New Salem Illinois, where he worked as a clerk in a country store. He served in the Black Hawk war as captain of a company of volunteers. He turned to the practice of law after a dissolute partner drove them to bankruptcy. Lincoln ran as a candidate to the U. S. Senate, during which campaign he excelled in his powers of debate. He ascended to the Presidency at the age of 52. On 4 March 1865, Lincoln was elected for his second term of office. A month later, the military power of the Confederac was broken. Three days after the evacuation of Richmond by Lee's army, the president visited Richmond, confirred with the authorities, and returned to Washington. on 14 April of that same hear, he was assassinated while attending Ford's theatre with his wife and a group of friends.
