Lion Attacking a Horse Poster

George Stubbs was born in 1724 Liverpool and became a reknown painter of the Romantic era. He began painting professionally in his twenties, mostly portraiture. After a visit to Italy he began an intensive study of horses and in the year after the creation of this painting, published a book, The Anatomy of the Horse. Thereafter his career became secure through the patronage of several aristocrats. This painting was completed in 1765 and measures 66 by 97 centimeters. It is currently in the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia. Geoge Stubbs died in 1806.
