Liverpool from Perch Rock, 1797 Postcard

The image shows Perch Rock, which is an outcrop of sorts on the Wirral side of the Mersey, just off New Brighton. Later on, after this scene, many coastal towns upgraded their marine defences, and Perch Rock became a fort with a lookout post during the Napoleonic wars. The site also housed a working lighthouse from 1683 right through to 1973; but, and perhaps unfairly, most now know Perch Rock as being synonymous with the fort, but forget about the lighthouse. The picture is from an engraving, itself based on a painting, both by JT Serres from around 1797.
