Long-sword [lawng - sawrd, sohrd] -noun 1. Also known as the bastard sword or hand and a half sword, the long-sword is a weapon used primarily in the 14th and 15th centuries. The long-sword has a straight, two-edged blade of between 3.9 and 4.8 span (90 and 110 cm) and weighing from 5.3 to 8 mark (1.2 to 1.8 kg). It has a cruciform hilt with grips sometimes longer than 1.7 span (15 cm) to accommodate either single or two handed use. Unlike the single handed broadsword, all parts of the long-sword including the pommel and cross guard could be utilised in melee combat. Two handed use of the sword obviously negated the use of a shield and therefore led to prioritising defence areas of body armour to effectively repulse attack while yielding optimal freedom of motion for parries and thrusts.
