Louis Sullivan Ornament Design Stone Coaster

The "Elevator Grille Ornament from Schlesinger and Mayer Store" is a significant architectural artwork designed by the American architect Louis H. Sullivan (1856-1924). Created in 1903/04, the ornament showcases Sullivan's organic style of architectural ornamentation, drawing inspiration from nature and geometry. The circular medallion features a central cross from which four flat shields radiate, with fluid shield-shaped and organic motifs against a sinuous geometric background. The ornament was part of Sullivan's design for the Schlesinger and Mayer Store, later known as Carson Pirie Scott and Company, in Chicago, Illinois. Although originally installed on the cage elevators, they were eventually removed for fire safety reasons. The store's facade and interior are a testament to Sullivan's design prowess and individualistic philosophy of architecture and ornament.
