Murphy is the most common surname in Ireland. Derived from the ancient Gaelic personal name Murchadh, it translates directly to "sea warrior" or "sea battler". The name stems from two Old Irish words: muir (meaning sea) and cath (meaning battle or war).Historical Origins & Septs The modern surname anglicises two distinct Gaelic forms, which developed independently across several regions: Ó Murchadha: Meaning "descendant of Murchadh". This form emerged from dominant family groups (septs) in County Wexford, County Cork, and County Roscommon. The Wexford lineage shared direct historical roots with the ancient Kings of Leinster. Mac Murchadha: Meaning "son of Murchadh". This branch was primarily native to Ulster—specifically County Tyrone and County Armagh. Regional Distribution While the name originated prominently in Leinster (Wexford), subsequent migrations shifted its highest density south to Munster. Today, it remains most heavily concentrated in County Cork and County Kerry. Due to massive historical emigration following events like the Great Famine, Murphy has also become incredibly widespread across the global Irish diaspora, ranking as a highly popular last name in the United States, the UK, Canada, and Australia. Variants & Motto Alternative Spellings: O'Murphy, MacMurphy, Murphey, Morphy, and O'Morchoe. Family Motto: The traditional Latin motto associated with the Wexford Murphy coat of arms is "Fortis et Hospitalis", which translates to "Brave and Hospitable".

I'd been experimenting with transferring designs to other products when my wife noticed this old time metal lunchbox. I knew she wanted it thus I created a special one just for here with a couple of her favorite photos I'd taken. Excellent. The cloud image on the front is her favorite of the two. It was taken right off our back patio. The other image was in West Texas several years ago, wide open spaces and roads.
