The wealthy decorated their walls with beautifully carved embossed gilded panels of leather. Gilded leather originated in Libya around the 6th century. By the 9th century it was being produced in Spain and became popular in the 17th and 18th centuries. Gilded leather is actually leather covered with a silver foil. To keep the silver from oxidising a varnish was applied that gave it a golden colour. The craft continues to this day with many artisans reproducing ancient and famous patterns.
