Restored from a 19th century book, this drawing by Hugo G. Ströhl is the coat of arms of the Duchy of Friuli showing the heraldic Eagle of gold spreading its wings on a blue background. Its origin goes back to 569, when the duchy of Friuli was the first duchy to be founded by the Longobards in Italy. It then became Patrie dal Friûl, the historical Friulian state that was independent from 1077 to 1420 under the control of the Patriarch of Aquileia.
As some areas of the Patrie del Friûl were at some point part of the Habsburg empire, Ströhl included this coat of arms in his famous work "Österreichisch-Ungarische Wappenrolle" (1890).
