Madoc the Mayan Navigator Poster
ink drawing on 9″×11″ sketchbook paper coloured on computer My husband kept telling me that the celtic designs I was drawing reminded him of Aztec and Mayan designs. I saw what he meant in the jaguar, eagle, lion, and dragon motif. I remembered the legend of St. Brendan the Irish monk who supposedly travelled to the Americas before Columbus and Madoc the Welsh prince who the city of Mobile, Alabama honoured with a plaque or monument. All this inspired me to draw a picture that combined Mayan and Celtic designs............... Irish and Welsh legend.................... The legend of Saint Brendan, an Irish monk, involves a fantastical journey into the Atlantic ocean in search of Paradise in the 6th century. Since the discovery of the New World, various authors have tried to link the Brendan myth with an early discovery of America. The voyage was recreated in recent times by Tim Severin. According to British legend, Madoc was a prince from Wales who explored the Americas as early as 1170. While most scholars consider this legend to be untrue, it was used as justification for British claims to the Americas, based on the notion of a Briton arriving before other European nationalities. A memorial tablet erected at Fort Morgan in Mobile Bay, Alabama reads: “In memory of Prince Madog, a Welsh explorer, who landed on the shores of Mobile Bay in 1170 and left behind, with the Indians, the Welsh language.” One tribe which was said to be Welsh-speaking was the Mandan. Barry Fell claims that Ogham writing has been found carved into stones in the Virginias, but grave doubts about these claims have been raised and none of these finds have ever been confirmed by credible linguists, epigraphers, or archaeologists..............................................................................................Change the size of the image by clicking the +or- sign change the background colour by clicking Edit and then click Background to choose your own colour.......... add your name or whatever words you want by clicking on Add Text and using Zazzle's large variety of text....................... I originally ordered this print in a larger size but was not pleased with the clarity of it. When I contacted Zazzle, they responded really quickly and were very helpful. I was able to reorder the print in a smaller size and it was shipped to me within a couple of weeks. The print was packaged well to ensure there was no damage during transit (Eco friendly, too!), and I am really pleased with it.
I am so grateful to the customer service team for the professional way they handled my order. I had this printed on matt finish card and I was really pleased with the quality. The colours were rich and the image sharp.
