The cal Arch of Maximilian is the largest woodcut in the world. At the very top of the drawing beneath the arch is seated Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor in 1508, dressed in full armour holding a globe in his hand, surrounded by magical animals as symbols of his great power. The menagerie includes a variety of birds and a double-headed eagle, a rooster, lion, bull, snakes, a faithful dog and rolls of papyrus.
