One of Edouard Manet’s most celebrated paintings, The Railway or The Gare Saint-Lazare (Le Chemin de Fer) depicts model Victorine Meurent sitting before an iron fence with an open book and sleeping puppy in her lap. Beside her stands a little girl in a cute white dress with a big blue ribbon. The white steam of a moving train can be seen behind the fence.
