【まるに ちがいちょうじ】丁子紋／文献によっては丁字としているが、丁子が一般的表記である。／花は淡紫色で、香りは高く、蕾を乾燥して製した丁香は、食品の香料、また医薬にも供された。絞ったものは丁字油。平安初期に輸入された丁字は、舶来香料として上流社会に珍重された。またその希少価値のために七宝の一つに加えられ宝尽くし文様に描かれた後に紋章に転化。行燈の灯心の燃えさしが、丁字形になると、福徳の入来のきざしとして喜ばれ、多分に縁起的な意味の紋章。（伊藤幸作編「日本の紋章」）
