Maru ni Sagejo Bicycle Playing Cards
The character crest 'Maru ni Agejo' (correctly 'Maru no Uchi Age Mon' with the ten facing upwards) and 'Sagejo' (where the line is parallel to the underline) are referred to as 'Agejo'. When the Murakami clan, who used 'Agejo', was defeated by Takeda Shingen of Kai, their army was dismantled and their crest was also broken down. Many camouflaged their crest along with their surname. However, many still used 'Agejo' as a secret crest. Meanwhile, in Kansai, the Murakami Suigun (naval force) in Seto Inland Sea was thriving, so they retained the 'Sagejo' crest. Therefore, even in the Edo period, people in Kanto used 'Agejo' while those in Kansai used 'Sagejo'. (From 'Kamon Hyakuwa (Upper)' by Niwa Kaji). This design was created based on the same book.
