The Boating Party (La Barque), painted by Mary Cassatt in 1893–1894, shows a woman holding a baby opposite a man rowing a sail-equipped boat on bright blue water. The high viewpoint, bold cropping, flattened shapes and strong decorative colour reflect Cassatt's interest in Japanese prints and turn this leisure scene into one of her most ambitious compositions.
