Menelik II, also known as Sahle Maryam, reigned as Emperor of Ethiopia from 1889 until his death in 1913. He also reigned as King of Shewa from 1866 until his death in 1889. By 1898, the Emperor had reached the pinnacle of his internal power and external prestige, and the process of territorial expansion and the establishment of the modern empire-state had been completed.
