Few people realize the true reason why the winter solstice is the reason for the season. Dring the solstice, the sun no longer makes the days shorter and darker—it appears to be dormant: Our ancient ancestors feared it was dead. The Romans named their sun-god "Sol". The word "Sol+stice" means "Sol"+"stands still". But 3 days later, on (or about) December 25, the sun is "reborn" and begins to rise higher each day making the days long and brighter.
