Money and Politics Tie

In this cartoon by J.S. Pughe, an octopus- like Richard "Boss" Croker covers New York City Hall with his tenacles. Croker was leader of Tammany Hall - the political machine of the Democratic party -for many years. He resigned in 1901, and Pughe's cartoon illustrates both the influence Croker welded over NYC and his reported acceptance of bribes. The cartoon caption read ":An English country seat and racing stable cost alot of money - and he knows how to get it." Pughe was a noted political artist and contributer to Puck magazine - the first US magazine to specialise in humour and political satire.
