Monteverde Cloud Forest Toucan Costa Rica Postcard

Monteverde Cloud Forest Toucan Costa Rica Postcard

The red-eyed treefrog (Agalychnis callidryas) is one of the most iconic amphibians of Central America, known for its vivid green body, blue and yellow flanks, and unmistakable crimson eyes. Despite its bold coloration, this nocturnal frog is a master of camouflage, remaining still during the day with its eyes closed and limbs tucked in to blend with the leaves. When threatened, it uses its startling red eyes and sudden movements to confuse predators—a defence mechanism known as “startle coloration.” Red-eyed treefrogs live in the humid lowland rainforests and montane cloud forests, breeding in temporary pools or on vegetation overhanging water, where the tadpoles drop into the water after hatching. One of the best places to observe the red-eyed treefrog in its natural habitat is the Monteverde Cloud Forest in Costa Rica. Perched along the Tilarán mountain range, Monteverde is a biodiversity hotspot teeming with life—from howler monkeys and hummingbirds to orchids and frogs. The cool, misty climate and dense forest canopy create ideal conditions for a wide range of amphibians, especially at night when the forest comes alive with croaks and calls. Monteverde’s conservation efforts and eco-tourism infrastructure make it a perfect destination for nature lovers seeking to encounter rare and charismatic species like the red-eyed treefrog in a lush, protected environment.

Such a huge range of different frogs available, which made my choices very difficult and now the reason I have a whole draw full of cards and postcards! Much better quality than you can buy in the shops and they are exactly on the subject I love and adore too.
