Conquered by the Deccan Muslim confederacy in 1565, the city was pillaged over a period of six months before being abandoned. The Prasanna Virupaksha temple, also know as the Underground Shiva Temple is one of oldest temples in Hampi. It was built during the reign of the Vijayanagara Empire.
