Ferdinand Victor Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863), who was born in the Île-de-France, near Paris, was considered leader of the Romantic school of art and was inspired by the likes of Rubens. His style did much to influence both the Impressionist and Symbolist movements. Baudelaire once wrote that he 'was passionately in love with passion, but coldly determined to express passion as clearly as possible'. This charming piece of work is from one of his sketchbooks which he took on a journey to Morocco.
